Die erste Ebene der Reflexion in “Les Masques Tombent” untersucht die Verbindung zwischen dem menschlichen Körper, dem Raum und der Geschichte und ihren verborgenen Überresten sowie den Übergang vom museal ausgestellten zum sakralen Objekt.

Sind diese Artefakte, zu denen sie so weit und lange reisen, ihre Vorfahren? Ein poetischer Blick auf die gesellschaftlichen Ansichten, auf ihre Entwicklung über Jahrhunderte. Kann eine neue Generation der ehemals Kolonialisierten durch einen ehrlichen, transparenten Umgang mit der kolonialen Periode durch eine Aneignung der eigenen Geschichte einen neuen Nord-Süd oder Süd-Nord Dialog aufbauen? Wie können sie ihre Identitäten neu definieren, neu erfinden? Wie schaffen wir es, gemeinsam eine neue Seite aufzuschlagen, uns über unsere Differenzen hinaus aneinander zu nähern?

What is the spiritual dimension of the restitution of cultural goods to Africa?

The first level of reflection in "Les Masques Tombent" explores the connection between the human body, space and history and their hidden remains as well as the transition from museum exhibits to sacred objects.
Are these artifacts, to which we travel long distances, our ancestors? This is a poetic look at social views and their evolution over centuries. Can a new generation of the formerly colonized countries establish a new North-South or South-North dialogue through an honest, transparent approach to the period, through an appropriation of their own history? How can they redefine, reinvent their identities? How do we manage to turn a new page together, to approach each other beyond our differences?

Zora Snake - performer and dancer from Cameroon - and Clay Apenouvon - visual artist from Togo - have been addressing these questions separately for years. In "Les Masques Tombent," they continue their questioning of the past together, with the goal of understanding history and its impact on the present and imagining a future.

This is a ritual of reconciliation - the dance gesture allows the human body to find its place in a technologized world, opens a dialogue without technological aid. Plastic spirits, inspired by Ewe Voodoo dolls from Togo and Ghana, Yoruba masks and statues from Benin, tell their stories to the living, to those who are open, changing the narratives of the present.
