Kassia war Komponistin, Dichterin und byzantinische Äbtissin im Konstantinopel des 9. Jahrhunderts - mit musikgeschichtlichen Einfluss bis heute. Sie liest sich auch als Art frühes feministisches und kosmopolitisches Vorbild. Kassia bestimmte selbst, wie sie leben und wen sie nicht heiraten würde: Sie bot Kaiser Theophilos von Konstantinopel während seiner „Brautschau“ die Stirn & gründete ein Frauenkloster. kainkollektiv und der Komponist Burak Özdemir mit seinem Barockorchester Musica Sequenza widmen sich der vielschichtigen Persönlichkeit und ihrem Werk in der (post)feministischen Oper – den SONGS OF CARE(VOLUTION).
Kassias musikalischen Werke überwindet in der Neu-Komposition von Burak Özdemir und seinem Orchester Musica Sequenza zeitliche, kulturelle und geografische Grenzen und werden mit alten und elektronischen Instrumenten ins Jetzt übersetzt. Zusammen mit der guatelmalesischen Sopranistin Diana Ramirez, der kanadischen Tänzerin Catherine Joidon und der syrischen Schauspielerin Amal Omran entsteht zwischen Musik, Oper, Text, Tanz, Film und Performance ein Portrait der Künstlerin Kassia.
Das KASSIA-Projekt gliedert sich in die KASSIA Oper-Performance und die digitale KASSIA-Konferenz, die im Herbst 2021 auf aktuelle feministische Debatten im Zuge des Rückzugs der Türkei aus der Istanbul-Konvention blickte. Die partizipative, digitale KASSIA-Ausstellung die im Frühjahr 2022 startet, schließt das Großprojekt ab und greift Themen, Motive und Fragen rund um Kassia auf. Sie fungiert als eine Plattform, die zur Ergänzung, Kommentierung, Interaktion und Fortschreibung der doku-fiktionalen Kassia-Geschichte einlädt.

Über: KASSIA ist die erste Zusammenarbeit zwischen kainkollektiv und Burak Özdemir/Musica Sequenza Orcherster. Das Künstler*innen-Team kainkollektiv arbeitet in unterschiedlichen Kollaborationen an theatralen Partituren zwischen Theater, Installation und Performance. Die musiktheatralen, doku-fiktionalen GLOBE OPERAS vom kainkollektiv basieren auf ausgiebiger Recherche und entstehen mit internationalen Künstler*innen. Burak Özdemir ist Komponist, Fagottist, Choreograph und Regisseur. Er studierte historische Aufführung und Komposition an der Juilliard School, der Universität der Künste Berlin und am Istanbuler Konservatorium. 2008 gründete er Musica Sequenza in New York; ein Ensemble, das für die Innovation von Barockmusik und interkulturelle Produktion steht. Seit 2010 lebt er in Berlin.

The composer, poet & Byzantine abbess KASSIA, who lived in Constantinople in the 9th century, is considered the first European composer whose musical works have survived. To this day, her works play an important role in music history.
Kassia was an emancipated woman. She dared to oppose Emperor Theophilos of Constantinople with theological acumen during the „bride search“ organized for him. She did not want to marry and founded a women’s monastery in Constantinople with her fortune. In her self-determined way of life, Kassia appears as a kind of original feminist role model. This „power woman“ is taken by kainkollektiv and the Turkish-German composer Burak Özdemir together with his grandiose baroque orchestra Musica Sequenza as the starting point for a (post-) feminist opera – the SONGS OF CARE(VOLUTION).
The basis for the performance opera staged by kainkollektiv is the multi-layered new composition of Kassia’s works by Burak Özdemir and his orchestra Musica Sequenza. Here, Kassia’s extremely ancient works, which transcend cultural and geographical (sound) boundaries, will be completely reinterpreted with ancient (and electronic) instruments in a contemporary way and made accessible to our present. Together with the soprano Diana Ramirez, the South Korean dancer Young-Won Song and the Syrian actress Amal Omran, a dazzling portrait of the artist Kassia is created between music, opera, text, dance, film and performance. The portrait also traces the West-East borderlands of Europe from which Kassia’s musical influences were drawn. Each are currently again deeply in crisis with patriarchal and national politics. At a time when Poland and Turkey are on the verge of leaving the Istanbul Convention for Women’s Rights in Europe, the aim is to re-interrogate Kassia’s legacy as the „first feminist artist“ and to sound it out for the future.

ABOUT The internationally working artist team kainkollektiv in various collaborations on theatrical scores between theatre, installation and performance. Working in international (co-)productions - the music-theatrical, docu-fictional GLOBE OPERAS, a performance format invented by kainkollektiv and based on extensive research - is a central part of the way they work. This production is the first collaboration between kainkollektiv and Burak Özdemir & his Musica Sequenza Orchestra. Burak Özdemir is a composer, bassoonist, choreographer and director. He studied historical performance and composition at the Juilliard School, the Berlin University of the Arts and the Istanbul Conservatory. In 2008 he founded Musica Sequenza in New York; an ensemble that stands for the innovation of baroque music and intercultural production. In 2010 he moved back to Berlin, where he practices new performance modalities with selfdeveloped methods. His musical activities have been seen in Europe, North and South America and Asia.
